Jason, yes, the default is set to capitalise. I have to admit we had this same issue several years ago and i can’t remember the solution. After some staff turnover it has shown up again. We’ll do some more exploration with the training data base.

I appreciate your recommendation for the setting as quite often it is something basic like that which I can miss, and is difficult to extract from the help files when searching for an answer.

Mahmoud, I have my master part window configured with a segment that is “Stock Summary with alternates”. This shows most of the information you mention and you can inspect the stock lines for further history. Would that help?

Ian, our process creates an internal work order for the AR part, whether purchased or from existing AR inventory. Once the inspection and/or other work is complete, the reconciled part is added to our inventory and then reserved to the destination work order. The stock line can be traced and the condition matches the need.

Start from the work order, Global/Quote-Billing/WO Quotes(or WO Billings)/Add/, in the “Adding Work Order Quote” window find the “Format” area in the middle of the window and choose “Task”. Now the work order quote will be populated with billing items based on tasks.

This can be set as a default in the work order Control Setup under the Quotes/Billings tab. I suggest that you wait to see how you want to do it before changing the default settings.

The Work Order method groups all parts, labour, outside repairs, etc. for the entire work order.

When using the Task method, the quote/invoice is subdivided into groups of charges (parts, labour, outside repairs, misc.) that are related to each task that you want to bill for. For most of the headings, text can be edited. I would suggest experimenting with the feature in order to see how it looks when printed.

Ian, we use the advanced billing option to invoice our work orders. It’s very easy to convert the quote to an invoice, easy to edit and add notes to almost any line, before the invoice is posted. We customized the quote and invoice docs to suit our taste. We do not use billing groups and have good results billing using either work order or task billing methods.

Thank you for your comments. Abigail, I will experiment with approved vendors/approved parts. Kevin, I think the customer warning will only appear when the customer is added to a work order header. Someone working downstream of the original entry would not be aware of the warning for that company if it was, for example, warning the user to provide only OEM parts to the customer. This is where I was thinking the attributes might align customers and parts in a similar way that group codes can align parts and vendors.

We have this happen occasionally in various modules. It is hard to duplicate for tech support because it happens inconsistently. When it does happen, the keyboard command ‘Alt + Tab’ , then select Quantum with ‘Tab’, will bring the correct screen back in view. That has been our solution. It happened a lot more with Firebird than it does with Oracle.

Lydia, Any manual settings that you make on the print settings screen become your default settings for subsequent print sessions. This works for us on all the modules that we use. Alternately the ‘Save Style’ feature is useful if you have more than one ‘Style’ for printing the document.

If you are generally OK with the FIFO inventory setting, then before using the Parts Management auto reserve function for your BOM, select the BOM item that you want to reserve a specific stock line for, choose the “BOM Misc” menu, select “Stock Reservations”. Here you can choose the specific stock line with a double click and also you can un-reserve the unwanted stock line. The Delete command prompts a “Do you want to delete this record?”, “OK” will remove the stock reservation.

We use the FIFO inventory setting but use the BOM misc./Stock Reservations to choose individual stock lines because of serial number, etc.

The e-mail address in the work order quote comes from the e-mail address applied in the work order header. We generate the quote from the work order using:

    global/quote-billing/work order quotes/add.

Feel free to call us if you need more explanation.

When you choose to “hide” the field use double click or key the highlighted letter (‘H’ to hide), then the box beside the field name will change from dark to white if it is now hidden.

    Hi Lydia,

Our experience is that the Mfg is not mandatory, the description is mandatory and can be edited from the Inventory Control screen/Edit, and the P/N can only be edited from the ‘Global/Change part number’ menu item. Although I haven’t tried, it looks like user access to the editing can be restricted in the security settings.

    Andy,

We also recently decided to stay with Firebird. Our evaluation did not reveal enough significant improvements that would justify the cost of converting to Oracle. In our case I view Oracle as a normal upgrade and think it should be treated as such by CC. We will review our position each year but for now we’re content to stay with Firebird. My sense is that, as time goes by, CC’s staff is less familiar with Firebird and anticipate this will tend to inflate our support issues.

I would be interested to read what kind of experiences other smaller business users have encountered when they switched to Oracle.

We use Firebird version and print Transport Canada Form One. Perhaps the forms work in a similar fashion. If the work order has remained closed, the date should remain the same on the certification as the day it was closed and a re-print would have the correct date. I have occasionally had to re-open a work order, days or weeks after it was closed, to enter data and then re-print the cert. In this case the date has changed on the task status to the new ‘closed’ date. I would then edit the status date to reflect the date I want on the cert. Check all the tasks, since the most recent ‘closed’ status date is the one that prints on the cert.

    Hi Marty,

We can’t seem to get any of the taxes to apply automatically in the Shop Control module when creating an invoice. No matter what tax code we pick in the header none of the selections are ever applied. We end up having to manually add the tax through the Global>Taxes menu on the WO Billing screen.

Am I doing something wrong, or does the tax calculation simply not work?

    Thanks

    Sandy

    Sandy,

I haven’t seen that this would calculate automatically as in the invoice module. When I roll an approved quote into Billing, I apply GST/HST as you mentioned: Global/Taxes/Apply flat rate tax. The tax rate will populate based on the tax rate value you have entered in the customer record.

Our issue that started this thread was that the tax calculation was frequently wrong by 1 to 3 cents and I would need to edit the value after checking it on my calculator. I’ve been working on resolving this for over two years.

Global>Print>Authorized Release Cert>STD WO Canadian Release Certificate:

    1) Block 11 Status/Work: Field is driven from condition code of stockline and not from work type of work performed.

    2) Block 3 Form Tracking No. and Block 5 Work Order/Contract/Invoice: Fields are both driven from work order field. Block 5 needs to be driven from PO (ref number) and Block 3 from the work order field.

    3) Block 12 Remarks: Should be driven from 8130 block 13 field in work order header instead of being manually entered in the Global>Notes field.

    4) Block 12 Remarks: Should be driven from Repair Manual module data, if the company has that module instead of relying on individual entered text fields. This option is available on the 8130 which is essentially the same form as the Canadian Form One and the EASA Form One.

This one boggles me. The 8130, Canadian Form One, and EASA Form One are basically the same form, yet the fields are all driven from all different areas. It would probably be less glitchy if CC would have modified the 8130 to create the Canadian Form One and the EASA Form One. Then at least the functionality of the forms would be the same. Instead it looks like they tried to re-invent the wheel a couple of times and turned out with a square wheel and a triangle wheel. What’s up with that?

    Sandy

    Sandy,

I have experienced the same problems with the Form One. It’s interesting to hear your experience since CC claimed their Canadian customers were using this same form without any difficulty and hence were very reluctant to make any changes at all. I agree that the form could be more universal and could be more adaptable through perhaps print screen settings as are some of the other documents within the system. For me, this is the one document that I want to be just right because this is what all of our customers see attached to every product we send out. I feel that the quality of the form reflects the quality of our product. We eventually ended up with customization to fill our needs.

Marty, I think I recall something about this being brought up at the QUE Conference.

Please contact Nic Hanna and Todd Lewis at Component Control, they may have more insight. When I had dinner with Z, Todd, Joe and Stewart (from Ametec) I think Stewart said that Ametec has this same issue, I believe.

    Thanks for your input Paul.

Just recently I tried to work this out again with CC’s training and tech support, including Nic. Neither dep’t seems able to come up with a cure and unfortunately we have not accomplished anything constructive. Some of these issues are just a wheel of frustration for me. I wish I knew how to navigate their corporate system which seems to continually hand everything over to the next guy and consume many hours for nought.

Thanks Paul. We have experimented with settings for decimal places. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of settings for taxes alone. I assume the tax is calculated individually per line rather than the sum of all taxable lines. I thought there might be a setting I was missing because I don’t see any other comments on this issue elsewhere and tech support shrugged their shoulders.
